May Week is a Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. tradition used to educate a chapter’s service community on a specific social issue. This year’s activities are dedicated to educating the community about Human Trafficking: Child Exploitation. To draw attention to the growing problem of human trafficking, specifically, child human trafficking, the Fort Bragg Area Alumnae Chapter will present the following May Week 2012 programs:

Tuesday, May 22, 5:15 to 8:30 PM – West Regional Library, screening, of the film “Call and Response: The Documentary,” with Town Hall discussion immediately following;

Wednesday, May 23, 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM – Main Post Theater at Intersection of Macomb St. and Reilly St., on the Fort Bragg Military Installation, screening of the film “Playground,” with panel discussion immediately following;

Thursday, May 24, 6:15 PM to 8:30 PM – Hope Mills Library in Hope Mills, N.C., the presentation of Town Hall Darkness to Light Training in partnership with the Child Advocacy Center, and

Saturday, May 26, 8:30 AM to 1:00 PM – School of Business and Economics, on the campus of Fayetteville State University, a Human Trafficking Symposium in partnership with Steel Magnolias, Inc., which is free and open to the public.

Human trafficking is related to sex and labor. The federal definition of human trafficking is when a person is induced by force, fraud or coercion to perform a sex act for money or anything of value or work under the total or near-total control of another person or organization. Human trafficking is considered modern-day slavery. According to the International Labour Organization, human trafficking generates $32 billion annually. In light of the Shaniya Davis incident locally, the fort Bragg Area Alumnae Chapter wanted to bring awareness to this troubling issue.

As we’ve shown throughout the month, child abuse and sexual assault can have a lasting negative impact on children. Studies have shown that children exposed to this violence can become vulnerable to experiencing or perpetrating other violence.

To wrap-up Child Abuse Prevention and Sexual Assault Awareness month, we wanted to highlight a growing awareness campaign started by Prevent Child Abuse America…

what would they do in a variety of situations and help them work through issues. Ask your child “what would you do IF someone puts their hand under your shirt or in your pants?” the person may tell you that it’s a game or that you will like these touches, but these are unsafe touches and you must tell us right away is this ever happens to you so we can keep you safe. Identify other adults the child can go to if something happens. List at least 3-4 key adults that you trust and the child could go to if something happens and the parents are not available. Emphasize that the child must keep on telling until someone believes them and takes action.

safe and unsafe touches. The term safe/unsafe is preferable to good/bad touches as it makes it clearer for the child. Sometimes a good touch (e.g., vaccination in the doctor’s office) can feel bad to the child’s body, and a bad touch (e. g. , inappropriate tickling/fondling) can feel good to the child’s body. The terms “safe/unsafe” eliminate this confusion. Give examples of safe touches: a doctor or nurse during an exam with Mom or Dad in the room, Mom changing the baby’s diaper, or giving the toddler sibling a bath. Any person can say “NO” to touching. Don’t touch a person who says “No touching”.

The most important thing is that both the adult and child are referring to the same body part. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a certain timetable for talking to children. At 18 months, start naming body parts with correct names. At 3-5 years, talk about “private parts” of the body and how to say “no” to unwanted touch; at 5-8 years, talk about safety away from home. Discuss safe and unsafe touching. Encourage talking about scary/confusing situations; at 8-12 years, talk about personal safety at video arcades, the mall and other places. Discuss rules of sexual conduct accepted by the family; at 13-18 years, stress personal safety and potential problem areas. Discuss sexual assault and abuse and family’s standards of sexual conduct.

It’s most common as children reach the ages of 8-12, but younger children are easy prey for perpetrators too. Frame the discussion around “safety” rather than “abuse”, which might be less scary for a child. Example: “I want to talk with you about safety regarding your body…your ‘private parts’. They are the parts that are covered by your swimsuit or underwear. Only certain adults are allowed to touch your private parts.”
