Don’t Overreact

If a child breaks an arm or runs a high fever, you know to stay calm and where to seek help because you’ve mentally prepared yourself. Reacting to child sexual abuse is the same. Your reactions have a powerful influence on vulnerable children.

(Fayetteville, NC) April is Child Abuse Prevention Month and what a fitting time for the Child Advocacy Center (CAC) to celebrate its 20th anniversary! Twenty years ago in April 1993, a group of dedicated and concerned community professionals came together to solve a problem. Their purpose – to alleviate the trauma that children experienced once a disclosure of abuse occurred.

During its history, the center has served more than 5,000 children and their families. Thanks to the continued generosity and dedication of hundreds of grantors, donors and volunteers, the CAC is on a firm foundation to fulfill its mission of providing healing and hope to child abuse victims in the years to come, while working towards its vision of a community where children live in a safe and nurturing environment free from sexual and physical abuse.

The CAC will host an Open House on Thursday, Apr. 18, from 5 – 7:30 p.m.at the new facility at 222 Rowan Street. There will be a Ribbon Cutting at 5 p.m., followed by tours and refreshments. The public and media are cordially invited to attend.

Joining hands with 19 community agencies, the Child Advocacy Center (CAC) offers a safe and child-friendly place to interview, investigate and provide support for abused children. The CAC also provides prevention education for parents, professionals and agencies in our community. We look to a future where all children live in a safe and nurturing environment free from abuse.

In August 2010, the CAC launched a new program using therapy dogs to meet and greet children and their families when they come to the CAC for interviews related to child abuse. Since that time, therapy dogs have become a fixture at the CAC, bringing stress relief to not only the child and family but also to the staff and multi-disciplinary team members as well. Being with a therapy dog can help calm a child and reduce the child’s level of anxiety. Being greeted by a therapy dog is not only beneficial for the child, but also helpful for the entire family. Several breeds of dogs are used as therapy dogs and all must go through training and certification. The therapy dogs’ handlers are volunteers who bring the dogs to the CAC.

Last year we lost two of our beloved therapy dogs, Nena, a white standard poodle and Abbey, a yellow lab. They were both loyal volunteers and we mourned their passing. Their handlers continue to volunteer with us with new therapy dogs that have been certified. Diane Wood now has Tigger, a blue 7-year-old standard poodle that was raised from a pup by Diane. This is Tigger’s first year as a certified therapy dog, and he loves visiting new people but is particularly attracted to children. His calm patient manner is a source of contentment for those he meets. Besides his volunteer work at the CAC, Tigger visits Raleigh Road Elementary School where the children read to him. He also visits patients at the VA hospital. Abbey’s owner, Flavia Thompson, has a new therapy dog named Casey, also a yellow lab. Casey is 16 months old and was certified in October 2012. Besides the CAC, Casey volunteers at the NC Veterans Home, Cedar Creek Assisted Living and CFVHS.

Tigger

Two new dogs and handlers to our program are Kim Vaughn and her dog, Talon, and Justin Chase and his dog, Sophia. Kim’s mother-in-law was a therapy dog handler and to honor her memory Kim decided to get her dog certified and volunteer as a therapy dog handler as well. Justin rescued Sophia, and despite her traumatic early years she is very well socialized and is an extremely good therapy dog. The children love her calm demeanor.
